Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains)

Dynamics GP to Business Central migration

Move to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with a team that knows it inside out and stays with you after go-live.

Business Central is all we do. You’ll work directly with senior consultants, including a Microsoft MVP and a CPA, who plan your data, integrations, and go-live with you.

  • Business Central partner since 2003
  • Microsoft MVP on the team
  • Vancouver-based, serving Western Canada

Why plan your move now?

GP keeps working after these dates, but Microsoft updates and support stop. Planning early lets you pick a go-live that suits your year-end and busy seasons. Older GP versions have earlier dates. Microsoft lifecycle details

Why EFOQUS

What our clients say working with us is like

Any partner can describe a migration plan. What matters is who turns up, how they handle the hard parts, and whether they’re still there after go-live. Here’s what clients have told us, in their own words.

You talk to the people doing the work

The consultants who scope your project are the ones who deliver it. No layers of account managers between your questions and the answers.

“What I appreciated most about talking to EFOQUS was we were talking directly to the IT experts we would be working with. No layers of salespeople or account managers to get through or to deflect our critical technology questions.” — Andrew Holland, IT Manager, Unified Alloys

Go-live is planned and rehearsed

Third-party systems, user testing, and a mock go-live are worked through before the real switch, so the cutover isn’t the first time anyone tries it.

“Despite the complexity of integrating third-party systems, the entire upgrade process was super organized, and EFOQUS ensured we went live at the right time.” — Suman Lalari, Controller, WCMRC

A standard core you can keep upgrading

GP sites often carry years of add-ons and workarounds. We use standard Business Central wherever it fits and extend it carefully where it doesn’t.

“EFOQUS helped us implement in a way that didn’t alter the base system structure, so the core Business Central finance and supply chain modules function as standard.” — Leo Raudys, CEO, Call2Recycle

We stay after go-live, and your team gets stronger

Quick help when something is urgent, and training that leaves your people able to handle everyday issues themselves.

“The technical knowledge at EFOQUS is outstanding. They taught us how to handle issues ourselves, which means we’re not constantly dependent on external help.” — Suman Lalari, Controller, WCMRC

Taking over from another partner

Unified Alloys

~90% of invoices paid without manual handling

A disappointing first Business Central deployment stabilised, then extended with KPI dashboards, invoice automation, and cross-company reporting.

“To stay competitive in this economy, companies have to sell more or cost less. EFOQUS and Dynamics 365 Business Central are helping us do both of those.”

None of these projects started from GP: they began with Dynamics NAV, a legacy custom ERP, and a Business Central deployment inherited from another partner. We’re sharing them because the hard parts of a GP move are the same: data you can trust, integrations that keep working, a rehearsed go-live, and support afterwards. Ask us about GP-specific references when we talk.

FAQ

Questions GP customers ask us

A new implementation. Business Central is a different product, so processes, security, reports, and integrations are set up fresh. Microsoft’s migration tools move the agreed data across. They don’t decide how your business will run in the new system.

Yes. GP stays live through design, testing, and training. On an agreed cutoff date, final balances and open items are moved and checked, and you switch. The two systems don’t sync, so the cutover window is planned with you in advance.

Yes, in the form you choose. G/L history can come across as period summaries for comparative reporting. Selected detailed GP transactions can be kept as a historical snapshot you can look up inside Business Central. That history is for reference only and isn’t re-posted as Business Central documents.

They don’t carry over as-is. We list each one and agree a replacement: standard Business Central, a supported app, an integration, or development. Many GP add-ons fill gaps that Business Central now covers as standard. SQL-based reports need rework because Business Central online has no direct database access.

Open receivables and payables move at their remaining balances. Inventory and open purchase orders can be included. Half-finished work, such as part-shipped orders, received-not-invoiced purchases, or production WIP, gets a rule agreed in advance: finish in GP, re-enter, or bring across as an opening position.

Trial migrations, reconciled each time against GP: trial balance, receivables and payables, inventory, and bank. Differences are explained and fixed. Your finance team signs off the key balances before go-live.

Number of companies and modules, data quality and how much history you need, how many reports, integrations, and add-ons are being replaced, and how quickly decisions get made. Budget for implementation services, recurring licences, and your own team’s time. We give you an estimate for your situation, not a generic figure.

Process owners join design decisions, finance handles data cleanup and reconciliation, key users test and train, and a sponsor approves go-live. Effort peaks during testing and cutover, so we plan around your month-end, year-end, and busy seasons.

Role-based training on your own processes and data. After go-live we help with the first payment runs, bank recs, and month-end, then move you into ongoing lifecycle support. The exact scope is agreed in your project plan.

Yes. Understanding your GP setup early helps you budget, start cleaning data, avoid spending on add-ons you’ll replace, and pick a go-live window that suits you.

The detail

How we plan the transition

GP stays in use while Business Central is prepared. The switch happens on a planned, rehearsed cutover date. Open any topic for the detail.

  1. Assess and plan

Review your GP setup and agree scope, roles, and timing.

  2. Design and prepare

Set up processes, chart of accounts, dimensions, reports, and integrations.

  3. Migrate and reconcile

Trial migrations, reconciled back to GP until the numbers agree.

  4. Test and train

Your people run their real work on migrated data before go-live.

  5. Rehearse and go live

Agreed cutoff, sequence, checks, and decision-makers, with a mock go-live first.

  6. Support everyday work

We help with the first payment runs, bank recs, and month-end.

How you’ll know you’re ready: your finance team has signed off the key balances against GP, your users have approved their main processes, and the cutover has been rehearsed. Microsoft’s migration validation helps, but it doesn’t replace your sign-off.

We agree with you what moves into Business Central, what stays available as reference, and how people will find it.

  • To run the business: customers, vendors, items, bank accounts, and open receivables and payables (at their remaining balances). Open purchase orders and inventory can come too.
  • For financial reporting: G/L history as fiscal-period summaries for the years you choose. Your main GP account segment becomes the G/L account and the other segments become dimensions.
  • For looking things up: selected detailed GP history kept in GP Historical Snapshot tables and viewed on GP pages inside Business Central. It’s reference only. It isn’t re-posted as Business Central documents.
  • Documents and anything else: an agreed approach to migrate, archive, or keep elsewhere.

Work in progress at cutover (part-shipped orders, received-not-invoiced purchases, returns, transfers, production WIP, unbilled project work) gets a planned treatment for each type: finish in GP, re-enter, or bring across as an opening position.

Microsoft’s GP migration tools target Business Central online; Canada is supported. Sources: GP data migrated, configure GP company migration.

GP add-ons, reports, and customisations don’t carry over unchanged. We list each one and pick the right replacement: standard Business Central, configuration, a supported app, an integration, or development.

  • Reporting: Management Reporter, SmartLists, Excel, and dashboards are mapped to Business Central reporting, Excel, or Power BI. Business Central online has no direct SQL access, so SQL-based reports need a new data-access approach.
  • Payroll and banking: payroll approach, payment files, bank feeds, and reconciliation confirmed with your banks.
  • Integrations: CRM, ecommerce, EDI, document management, and warehouse systems reconnected. See integration services.
  • Canadian requirements: sales tax, payment formats, and multi-currency confirmed for how you operate.

There’s no single price or duration. The estimate depends on the number of companies and modules, data quality and history needs, how many reports, integrations, and add-ons are being replaced, process complexity, and how quickly decisions can be made.

Budget for three things: implementation services, recurring licences and apps (our licensing team can help), and your own team’s time for process decisions, data cleanup, testing, training, and sign-off.
